Design and Technology

Design and Technology is taught through all year groups in the school with the children developing skills as they progress throughout the years. Each year, the children will complete at least two large DT projects, with many other aspects of Design and Technology being incorporated into other areas of the curriculum.

In Reception, the children will begin to construct basic models and as they progress into Key Stage 1 they will use a range of tools and techniques to develop a multitude of products including cooked dishes, wooden structures and basic sewing skills. In Key Stage 2, the children will further build on these skills creating more detailed and complicated designs, while using a wider range of tools and skills. These will include detailed models, more complex cross stitch sewing and more advanced cooking skills.

Design and Technology allows the children to develop a range of skills that not only incorporates practical skills such as cutting, shaping, joining and finishing products, but it also develops skills such as communication through sharing ideas and supporting others, creativity in design, trial and error and evaluation of their own and others work. This provides children with the opportunity to build on skills from previous years and other subjects to develop a range of life skills for the future. While some aspects of Design and Technology can be tricky for children, this develops their perseverance and determination to improve their skills, confidence and knowledge.
